What is kendo?

Kendo translates to the “The Way of the Sword”.

It is one of the oldest and most respected martial arts of Japan derived from samurai warriors hundreds of years ago
turning battlefield techniques to ways of disciplining the human character and personal growth through the principles and application of the Katana (sword).

Today, it is widely practiced by many men, women and youths of all ages across the globe and International Kendo Federation (FIK) holds the World Kendo Championship Tournament every 3 years.

Kendo is a means for self-discovery, character development and building a resilient spirit balanced with one’s physical
and mental well-being.

What’s it like to learn kendo at Oakland Kendo Dojo?

You will find that our kendo practices include a mix of youths, adults and seniors, men and women alike all ranging in experience from beginning students to high ranking instructors.

If you are new to the world of Kendo we require that you observe two complete practices before beginning your training at Oakland Kendo Dojo. We feel this is the best way for a prospective student to see what Kendo is like before deciding to join.

For the first few sessions you will be introduced to the traditional formalities and basics of kendo by Tanouye Sensei, 6 Dan Renshi and our Chief Instructor. Over the next few months of your training you will build on those fundamental skills in a group setting, eventually wearing the uniform and donning the protective equipment.
